Energy Astrology: October 2006 Column
Lassoing the Stars for a Better Life

Moving Into Mystery
Nearly every civilization has devoted itself to understanding “The Greater Mysteries,” the creative powers of the Universe. In ancient Greece, a select few passed initiation tests to become fully indoctrinated in the Elysian Mysteries. Today’s Freemasons and Rosicrucians, Christ-based occult sects, were rooted in these and even older traditions, perhaps even the study of the Jewish Quaballists. Around the world and across time, large and small groups and countless individuals have sought the unseekable through organized and private methods. October presents the portal for your own foray onto the questionable, confusing, confounding, but commendable path of Mystery.
You cannot leap into the vast and stored knowledge of the Universe simply by will. There’s a certain order to events, a necessary politeness. You await an invitation. It’s safer that way. Many spiritual leaders insist that to plunge into the abyss uninvited and unprepared is to invite death; worse, go mad. Yet we are all encoded with the keys to opening the doorways into and through the Greater Mysteries, the mind frame in which we discover the truths of life, death, and everything in between. We’ve only to await our time, and it’s now.
In October, several astronomical signs point toward the path of Mystery. You don’t have to follow the signs. You can stay in the sun, bask in the every day, or remain ignorant of the deeper pulses of the occult. I don’t recommend this attitude. Certain mysteries rise to meet all of us for are we not all alive? Are we not all dying? Are we not all on the journey of and for love?
The unfolding of Mystery will carry us into and through October, straight into the arms of November, where (or when) we shall continue our pursuit of the hidden. What are you seeking? At one level, ancient and new wisdom that, like a diamond just being cut, only reveals its brilliance to the viewer that can really see it. You don't have to do anything unusual to perceive the clear and maybe even stinging truths of Mystery. You need only be willing to traverse the pathway that spirals into your own soul. Here is the magic; here is the “you” you’ve been awaiting.
The Spiritual Backdrop
In Energy Astrology, we analyze for energy
rather than events. According to an astrological reading of the heavens, a given month is evaluated according to moons in motion, planets in play, and unique sparkles of stars. In traditional astrology, you review these and all other celestial movements in attempt to figure out how they might affect you. The idea is that astronomical anomalies work separately and together to alter the fabric of the Universe. It all means something, so you better scrutinize all of it. This is a long and laborious process. In Energy Astrology, you peer through the astronomical to observe only that which is meaningful. You measure what is important by reviewing its impact on the human energy system.
All humans share the same energy system, a complex set of energy organs that translate physical energy into spiritual energy and back again. The most well-known of these are the chakras and the auric field. An energy astrologer can easily pinpoint which stellar events will stir or scorch; they create the greatest disturbance in the human energy field. Once you’ve figured out which sky-based shifts are going to stimulate the most powerful response, you can then decide how to work the fluctuating and available energies to help yourself or others. The ultimate question is whether you will use this energy wisely or not.
Certain moves in the firmament will free, stimulate, or form spiritual energies. How better to create ways to responsibly and beneficially use astronomical energies than to start with the spiritual changes occurring any given month? In reaction to starry event, hundreds or maybe thousands of spiritual energies or truths fall to the earth on a monthly basis, as does starlight. It is possible to condense these truths into a universal label, and thus have an easier time working with them. It’s like ordering in a restaurant. When you order soup, you don’t say, “I want the liquid bouillon full of onions, peas, green beans, and carrots.” You say, “I’d like the vegetable soup, please.” So can we abbreviate all the spiritual energies available on a specific month into a single title.
In September, we collectively worked toward Heroism. Heroes most likely and most unfortunately -- achieve honorable mention by being pitted against the odds, sometimes losing their heads (literally) in the process. Hence I cautioned everyone about September’s happenstance and chanciness, all of which encouraged the inner hero to make a stand, or at least attempt a good sit-in. Well, if you’re reading this column, you’ve survived September and are hopefully now serving as a hero in your own life. Being an “everyday hero” isn’t always easy or grand. It probably involves cleaning up a lot of messes; in my house, they aren’t even my own. Mix kids, dogs, turtles, and clients all in the same space and there’s a chance that even a good Feng Shui master will surrender before decluttering. Not only is heroism messy, it doesn’t necessarily guarantee a reward. When did the “bad guy” thank you for standing up to him or her?
Becoming your own hero, however, is the first and most necessary step toward becoming an initiate in life’s Greater Mysteries. To open the darkest of doors, to walk through the shadows, to linger in the abyss, you have to be able to stand alone. You need to count on yourself more than anyone or anything else. You must know how to trust your inner truth over any evidence introduced through your outer senses. A Mystery, after all, is just that: a slice of the unknown. You can’t know what you will find
or become when you enter the Mystery, or it isn’t a Mystery.
The word “mystery” means strange, obscure, or hidden. Why have so many cultures and individuals worked so hard, and usually under the stealth of illusion, to probe the unseen? Because everything is created out of Mystery. Once there was darkness. Except for the Sun and the occasional swatch of lightning, there were no fires, electricity, or neon signs. Yet these hovered in the half-life of Mystery, waiting for someone heroic or foolish enough to brave the dark and discover
“light.” Even now, the ingredients for what doesn’t yet exist are already present, but have not yet been retrieved from the Greater Mystery and puzzle-pieced into workable order.
There is more to be created, and so the Greater Mystery calls each of us. This month, you will receive your opportunity for Mystery to claim you, to swallow you so that you, too, might help realize the impossible. There is a pocket in the universe that you and only you can reach and alight. It is your job to find and share what lies within this dark patch of space. In Greek mythology, fire was brought to earth by the heretical god, Prometheus, who tired of seeing humans live in the dark. So did he steal fire from the gods’ dwelling and bring fire to earth. We humans were grateful, but the gods replied by chaining him to a rock and setting an eagle on him, which continually rips out his eyeballs. May you now tap into your own heroism and journey forth in the Mystery, where unseen, you are enabled to steal the fire that is yours to share with us all. And may you also escape retribution.
The Depths of October:
Wherein Lies the Light that is Your Light to Seek
On October 23rd, the Sun and the Moon slip into Scorpio. Thus are we ushered underworld, the scorpion abyss of Mystery.
In the energy system, Scorpio relates to the 8th chakra. This pinprick of blackness floats just above your head. Enter its realm at your own risk, for as soon as you surrender yourself to its cavernous mouth, you’ll discover yourself hovering in the center of the known and also nonexistent Universe.
The 8th chakra intersects all dimensions, planes of existence, worlds, and antiworlds. On an individual basis, it is the space of karma, the recording of all that you’ve ever done and been. Through it, you can link into all possible or probable parts of the past, present, or future. You can also traverse into the corners of the Universe; the Universe that has and will continue to be, and the one that has never been.
All great ideas are initiated in the 8th chakra. The imagination is your working tool. It is the light that can seer through the darkness. You use it to figure out what might, should, or shouldn’t become. October’s excursion into Scorpio is sure to invite you into the void and the seeds of your own desires.
The Sun represents what is real, tangible, and conscious. The Moon signifies what is desired or loved. In October, your Sun-self merges with your Moon-self to descend into your Scorpio-self. In other words, based on your personal will and hopes, you can now decide what you want or need to create by opening to the mysterious powers that lie inside. You have to enter the deepest and most secret part of yourself to uncover the powers and abilities needed to support your dreams; perhaps to even find the important dreams. That can be scary.
You might think that October is going to plunge you into Dante’s inferno, a traveler pushed into Hell. That’s not an overly helpful way to look at the situation. Think of it this way. You are a Hero plunging into the shadows of yourself to find a light for the world that only you can bring forth. You are enabled by your consciousness, the personality that you’ve spent years developing. You are strengthened by your will or motivation, the impulse to do better for yourself and to assist others. You are guided by your love and supported by those who love you. And you will know when you’ve uncovered the secret you’ve been searching for for you will love what you find.
There are living and invisible guides, all of which will accompany your search. Your ultimate companion, however, is yourself the self that you will find when you reach the bottom of the void, the light in the tunnel. You see, a part of you already exists in the bowels of the deep. How else would you know where to go? Where to search? What you desire already exists, and will call you to it. You aren’t a danger to yourself, so you needn’t be frightened. Simply journey forward, for it’s time to bring the Mysteries to light.
Becoming Your Own Initiate
There are certain clues to working in October’s Mystery. Here are a few.
- Make use of the full moon. The full moon occurs in Aries on October 6th. Aries traditionally represents the energy of self, appearance, and personality. During the days just before and after the moon, concentrate on the “sunny parts” of your life. What or who do you see when you look in the mirror? Who do you think you really are? What aspects of your personality reflect your “real self” and which are masks, disguises that keep others and your deeper self at bay? Appreciate your surface self but be willing to go deeper.
- Connect through the new moon. The new moon falls in Libra on October 22nd. Libra symbolizes relationship and balance. Now you can use others to mirror yourself back to you. Pay close attention to how you act, feel, and seem in relationship. Do you act like a chameleon, continually adapting to others? Do your goals and needs change, depending upon whom you are with? Or do you ride the other side of the fence, remaining fixed and even rigid in the company of others? Neither extreme is good playground behavior, and will certainly undermine the deeper search for meaning. Use Libra-like energy and remain balanced in relationship. Remain yourself no matter who you are around! This self-sense will help you sort what is and isn’t you or fitting for you -- in the months ahead.
- Appraise your “Sun” and “Moon.” Shortly before October 23rd, reflect on the most obvious parts of your personality and disposition. What are your strengths? How have you used your personal powers, abilities, and qualities to accomplish your goals in the past? Now highlight your “Moon” traits. What are your dreams, values, and loves? What would you die for, if it came to that? Concentrate on putting these two aspects of self together, and commit to the next step.
- Ask to know what you are doing here, on this planet, at this time. What are you supposed to create? You don’t have to answer the question yet, that’s the goal of your quest in the scorpion abyss!
- Take the plunge. Go ahead! Give yourself permission to search for your creative purpose and the parts of yourself that can carry it out. You might pay special attention to your dreams and input from others or to significant or recurring emotions and thoughts. Don’t inhibit the process. Erase the intrusive beliefs that say, “No, that’s not something I can do,” or, “No one would believe this one!” You are traveling into the Mystery. The process will be mysterious.
- Ask for guidance. There are special guides from God and the Great Beyond sent to assist with this process. There are also special beings called friends and family. All help and support.
- Know that the Mystery is safe. Something can be hidden but safe, secret but good. Look for the sweetness of the self and the search, and it will be yours.
