Walking the Cat: Doing the Impossible
Oct 13, 2026
Any of you on my personal Facebook would know that I leash walk Garfield the cat. For real.
When it’s dark out, we get in a good hour. That’s his bewitching time and we make it once or twice around an entire block. Afterward, he snoozes. He often forgets he dislikes Carl the Wild Sheep Dog and sometimes cozies up to him. Garfield is probably recounting how many mice and birdies he caught when on the prowl. (He makes this part up.)
The point is that even the veterinarians think what Garfield has accomplished is near-impossible. Obviously it is not. Garfield is proof consequence that if something is important and practically doable and we’re motivated, we can accomplish it.
Let me speak for a minute about fantasy. Some people might hear me saying, “So, if I want to win the lottery, I will,” or “That means I can make it as a ballet dancer” when 70 years-of-age. Emphasize the word “doable.” Quantum physics suggests that we shape reality, which is mainly subtle energy, with our consciousness. We are also bound by the laws of classical physics when we are in a body.
I guarantee that there is no way my middle-aged body is going to pirouette, though it could probably pull off a slow jig.
To me the caveats for creating the incredible are these:
- The goal is suitable to our soul. Our soul entered this life with a to-do list. Perhaps the line items have changed during real reality, but we’re more inclined to accomplish the unusual if our soul is voting with the body-self.
- We can almost taste the outcome. Life is arduous. While we’re manifesting our own lives, millions of others are doing the same. Think of our different ideas as gazillions of frequency bandwidths zipping around the ethereal space. It’s easy to get erased by—or get entangled in—others’ dominant intentions or even their chaotic behaviors. We must be energetically clear and willing to deal with all that drama to triumph.
- We are willing to endure and adapt. Read the above paragraph. Sometimes we must work hard to keep going. We might have to adjust to changing circumstances. That doesn’t mean we can’t still have fun along the way, however.
How did I initiate leash-walking Garfield? Well, he is responsible.
He was almost feral his first year of life. He took to my son, Gabe, who was in North Carolina for baseball. Pretty soon, Garfield was sleeping with Gabe every night. When Gabe was done in the Carolinas, he flew Garfield to my house.
I’d never had a cat. I agreed to host Garfield if I could treat him like a dog. But I wasn’t planning on walking him.
That came about because I noticed that Garfield would sit in the window and watch the dogs walk. It struck me that he got it. I bought a leash—and he immediately figured it out. Now, even my dog walker hikes around with “Mr. G.,” as the neighbors call him, when I’m out of town.
You know the impossible really has been accomplished when no one within a five-block radius stops to stare when you’re walking a cat.
What do you want to achieve? Pause. Take a moment and formulate a phrase to describe that goal and make sure that it meets these principles:
- It is conceivable.
- You can taste the desire.
- It’s important enough that you won’t quit.
- Both the process and outcome seem like they can support your soul and at least sometimes cause joy.
Then get going!
P.S. Garfield reminds me every day that intuition isn't about rushing to the next answer. It's about slowing down enough to truly notice what's around you. That's exactly what we're practicing inside the Energy Healing Academy, developing your awareness, strengthening your intuition, and discovering that some of life's greatest teachers appear in the most unexpected ways.
