What About Those Fairies?
Nov 03, 2026
A few years ago, I was teaching in Chicago, and I handed out an assignment before lunch.
“Go outside on lunch break and see if you can connect with the fairy community.” The assignment followed discussing the topic of “Old Earth,” the long-ago earth in which the devic beings interacted with humans and animals.
The devic group is one of magic, joy, and oddity. Life is supposed to be interesting. They make it so.
No sooner had the words passed my mouth when dozens of orbs floated across the room. Big and little colored orbs, like kid’s propelled soap bubbles. The kind they huff and puff and barely send out, before their face turns blue.
There were exclamations of delight. What was most interesting was that only about half of the group could see them. The other half were like, “What? What are you seeing?”
I’m not a full-on New Ager. Okay, I am. Sort of. But I am extraordinarily grounded in the everyday world. I roll my eyes if people fail to do their laundry because the elves should be on it. I work. Hard. I love my work and I also have bills to pay, and they seem to multiply as time goes on. My favorite vacation is to hike, and I’m not communicating to the trolls when trudging across huge mountains so high that there is no way I have spare brain change for chatting with winged creatures. I’m just trying to survive. (And the mountains are more like hills.)
But I do know they are real.
I saw long and shimmering creatures when I was young. Some shifted in and out of the trees. A few blew past my mind scape. I was once in Wales and the fairies started giggling. I drove in a fog on a road that was only one way. I drove around the same road in a circle, continuing to get stopped at the same stop sign.
Later, when driving to Holyhead, an island off the coast of Wales, I made it from the port to the end of the island in about an hour, without passing over a bridge. It took four hours to drive back, and I had to traverse a huge bridge. I parked my car, exhausted from the return drive. When I returned, my lights went off and on, I heard giggling, and the horn beeped. They got me.
There is so much more, but the truth is that I believe.
I don’t care if you do, but do you want to try and make contact anyway? There are many types of devic spirits: nyads, little fairies, tall Shining Ones, star creatures that shine in your eyes when they want to impress you. Why not try making contact? It is fun and a bit unusual. It is certainly not boring.
All you have to do is ask.
Really ask. I don’t think you have to believe, but you must open yourself up. Call upon them through whatever spiritual belief system that works for you and ask them to present themselves—perhaps with mischief, but also with joy. Then give them a few days and nights to bridge the gap between the Old and New (and rather boring) world to reach out.
Pay attention to the odd things that happen. Dreams. Disappearing keys (they love keys.) Pranks. Intense healing. See what you think and then decide. Do you want to be linked to the Old Earth? The veils are thin, and life is supposed to be interesting. Ask. Decide. Wait. Notice. Be an interesting person! It beats being bored.
