Shamanism is For Everyone—Reaching the Universal Through Your Chakras

I’ve known I am a shaman for decades.

As a child, I heard spirits and saw colors. I received visitors in my dreams, who were a lot more interesting than some of the people around me. As an adult, I’ve studied with healers in Peru, Morocco, Costa Rica, Venezuela, and more.

Being shamanic does not make me unique. The truth is that we’re all shamanic, no matter our training or ethnic background.

For one, we all have an eighth chakra, known by many names in various subtle body systems. This black and silver chakra speaks to our soul’s ability to touch the hems of the heavens, hear the poetry of the grasses, and relate to all times and spaces. It hovers above the head and opens to all realms, dimensions, and planes of light. Secondarily, every chakra can link you to levels of reality that can support you living boldly and authentically.

A shaman is a medium between the spirit planes and the earthly world. On a day-to-day basis, we don’t always see how often we’re operating as this bridge. But you truly are a lightning bolt that links the heavens to this world. You don’t have to use drums, rattles, and sacred brews to wield this authority.

Have you ever dried a child’s tears? Recently I was at Disney with my grandbaby, a sprightly 20-month-old who heroically made it through five rides at the Magic Kingdom. She only melted down once, and “Nini’s arms” transformed into a crib.

Have you ever communicated with a pet to make their lives better? Well, I have this one down, what with three dogs that don’t like to take “no” for an answer.

There is Honey, whose barks are insanely translatable to me. (Snackies, walk, car…rinse and repeat.) Carl is like, BARK! MAILMAN! BARK! (The world’s most devious person alive. You just know they are really stealing not leaving treasures.) Garfield the cat—a puppy in cat’s fur if ever there was one—has only to look at me a certain way and we’re out the door walking with a harness.

I’m not speaking lightly of some of the work that shamans—and we as shamans do—on a regular basis. Healing. Doctoring. Transmuting. Therapizing. You constantly play all those roles, with or without a title.

As a shaman, there are two main “geographies” you can interact with: worlds and universes. Most shamanic systems worldwide explain that there are three basic energetic domains available to the shaman. These are the lower, middle, and higher worlds. Each is linked to its own suite of spirit beings, temptations, and giftings.

There are two ways I suggest bridging to these realms: the chakras and the absolute versus polarity universe.

I work with twelve chakras. These are organized (from bottom to top) in layers: dense, psychological, and spiritual. (See where I am going?) Hence, through the chakras in each level, you can bridge into the lower, middle, and higher worlds.

Shamanic undertakings can be rife with difficulties, such as negative entities, wounds to the soul, entrapments. You can avoid these challenges by always connecting through the center of a chakra. In the middle is a form of light I call “absolute.” It casts no darkness. It contains the codes of your unique and brilliant spirit. This light assures safety.

There are also two universes that run side-by-side through our world.

• The absolute universe is the spiritual or heavenly backdrop that is loving and empowered toward goodness.
• The everyday, polarity universe holds oppositional concepts and beings.

As a guideline, I suggest you practice your shamanic birthright by stretching through an applicable chakra center into the absolute universe. You do this through intention.

Whether you’re creating a song, aiding a client, soothing a child, or obtaining spiritual guidance, those two steps—centering inside a chakra to connect with a domain, and operating through the absolute universe—will serve you well.
