Travel by the Chakras

Sep 08, 2026

I love to travel. To me travel provides a never-ending invitation to adventure, even if plans get bumbled every so often. In fact, while I write this tip, I’m on the first of three flights heading to Spain to hike part of the El Camino. I’ll eventually meet up with a friend in Madrid and fly to Santiago, the typical finale of the Way of St. James, a set of pilgrimage hikes. But we’re going in Santiago and then head to the ocean.

To Finisterre, the “end of the world.”

This is one of several trips I take every year, usually internationally, except for my monthly sojourns to my grandbaby’s home in DC and to Disney with her and her parents.

How do I select my excursions? I’m clear about my strongest chakra. I know which style of trip will nourish me and which will not. I’d recommend selecting the type of journey you want the same way.

We all have more vital and less vital chakras. This isn’t about good or bad. To accomplish its purpose, your soul must engineer itself through certain chakra/s rather than others. In this way, it can tap into those chakra assets and use them to achieve its goals.

Following are quick descriptions of each of the 12 chakras I work with. See which set of descriptions best fits you and then follow for tips on which types of sites and activities might best suit your traveling fancy.

Chakra  Descriptors

First: Physical, passionate, always moving

Second: Emotive, creative, sensual

Third: Mental, organized, planned out

Fourth: Relator, loving, healer

Fifth: Communicative, philosophical, learned

Sixth: Visual, aesthetic, planner

Seventh: Spiritual, meditative, peaceful

Eighth: Shamanic, mystical, supernatural

Ninth: Harmonizer, idealistic

Tenth: Grounded, natural, environmentalist, cosmic

Eleventh: Leader, commanding, bold

Twelfth: Unique to you

Following are some travel tips.

First chakra: Go bold and be busy. Make sure your trip includes hiking, walking, or some sort of adventure interaction. You bore easily and won’t sit still; in fact, you’ll race through museums, so select countries and sites that let you interact. (This is me. I even took a camel trip.)

Second chakra. Hello, foodie—or art lover or museum walker. Then again, you love the five senses and could gladly head to Thailand or Bali for massages. How about learning how to cook in Paris?

Third chakra. Wherever you go, make sure you compose your itinerary well ahead of departing. Create your checklist, book airplanes that take off on time, and research all about where you are headed. Then gather data as you go.

Fourth chakra. You’re the perfect group mate. Travel with companions, friends, or join a group. You’ll love sites in which you mix with the inhabitants, even live with them.

Fifth chakra. What do you want to learn about? For you the trips focused on music, theater, research. Journey to old castles or philosopher’s homes or to learn Greek legends.

Sixth chakra. Wherever you go, the landscape must strike your fancy. You’ll only enjoy an area that is beautiful to you. A tip. Stay in higher end or unusual hotels or settings.

Seventh chakra. You’ll only fully relax in sacred spiritual sites, worship temples, or the equivalent of an ashram. You need to bask in the spirit of space and place.

Eighth chakra. Look for a shaman conducting plant medicine ceremonies in their native country or haunted houses in places like New Orleans. Stay overnight in the pyramids and talk to the deceased priests. You got it.

Ninth chakra. You’re the consummate volunteer, whether it’s to build an orphanage to tend to elephants on a reserve. Give aid and you’ll receive.

Tenth chakra. It’s outdoors for you. Camp in Lapland and stare at the stars or plant trees in a deforested area. You’ll sleep best on vacation the more surrounded you are by Nature.

Eleventh chakra. As odd as this sounds, select trips by element. Eleventh chakra aficionados love the elements, like fire, wood, water, earth, stone, air, or metal. Iceland combines fire and water. Get thee to a mountain (earth and air). Select a desert and experience stone (crystal sands) and fire (heat.)

If you want, select a chakra type you haven’t experienced before and stretch yourself.
